Astley Green Colliery

This 20thC colliery is now a museum and still has its pit head gear and winding engine.  For many years it was the deepest mine in the area at 833 yards.  It was sunk in 1908 and closed in 1970.  In 1939 five men were killed in a gob fire (a fire caused by the spontaneous combustion of decaying timber and coal dust).

I haven't put titles to any of the images.  They can speak for themselves.
