Speke Hall

Images taken at Speke Hall, Liverpool, in November 2016.  It's a National Trust property on the bank of the River Mersey and is now sandwiched between what was the old Liverpool Airport (formerly Speke Aerodrome) and the present-day Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

When the runway for the latter was first  built, the terminal buildings were still the ones on the old site and a linking taxiway was built along the edge off the shore between the river and the Hall.  The gardens of the Hall had originally extended down onto the shore, but the development put an end to that.  A massive earth-bank was put up between the taxiway and the Hall to protect the property from aircraft noise.  It had the secondary effect of cutting off all access to, and views of, the river and the shore.  Although the taxiway is now redundant, the bank remains together with a large steel fence.  You can now climb the bank for views across the river.
