Mute Swans

All these images were taken in June 2015 at the Abbotsbury Swannery in Dorset.  The swannery is on the shore of the Fleet Lagoon created by Chesil Beach.

The next few images show some of the search by staff for the parents of the cygnet.  The birds are wild, but all are ringed.  The piece of paper carried by the warden has on it the identification code for this youngster's parents.  Unfortunately, being wild, the adults are not going to come forward and claim their own and, when they're on the water, you can't see the leg-rings.  This is not a situation in which a public-address announcement, "Will the parents of ... ... please ... ...?"  will work.

When I left the parents were still not located.  Staff had an idea which pair with just one chick were the sought-for couple, but they couldn't verify this.  To have released the cygnet near them without being sure would have put it at risk.  They took it away to feed it before trying again.
